The panel, titled “Assessing Drug Misuse across California: Focusing on Statewide Trends and the Impact of Legislation” begins at 10:30 am and will center on: Evaluating the impact of CURES database legislation in reducing the misuse of prescription drugs; Reviewing the impact of passing Proposition 64; examining the legalization of marijuana and the need to raise awareness of the harm it can cause; Considering ways to decrease the use of illicit drugs and developing strategies to reduce drug-induced deaths; Understanding the importance of education and the role of public health professionals in raising awareness of the harm caused by illicit drugs and the consequences of repeated use; Focusing on prevention; assessing existing programs and the discussing value of research in delivering successful programs to particularly vulnerable groups.
