Reigniting the War on Drugs?
On September 24, President Trump addressed the 2018 United Nations General Assembly and called for a reignited War on Drugs, pledging to eradicate the “scourge” of drug addiction and create a “drug-free future.”
The President cited his administration’s “aggressive” tactics in securing the southern border as effort to combat the flow of drugs, saying, “The call is simple: reduce drug demand, cut off the supply of illicit drugs, expand treatment and straighten international cooperation. If we take these steps together, we can save the lives of countless people in all corners of the world.”
It’s not quite that simple. The Law Enforcement Action Partnership’s criminal justice experts know that prohibitive laws and criminal justice crackdowns in response to a public health issue are not a viable solution. LEAP is working to defend a more ethical, practical approach to drug policy.
Because there’s no better way to say it, we’ll leave you with an oldie but a goodie: watch as LEAP co-founder Captain Peter Christ demolishes every argument for the War on Drugs.
